Although government job in India are not the best paying and the government is not considered to be the best of paymasters the other things make up for it. The job security, training opportunities and perks compensate for not being a high paymaster. Although, after the pay commission the scales have been revised substantially and people employed by the government does make a substantial amount.
On top of the rung of the ladder for government jobs are IAS, IPS and IFS officers. They not only command a high take home salary but also exclusive perks and unforeseen amounts of respect in society.
After them you have Income tax commissioners who are paid really well to be able to get the coffers of the government filled by catching income tax offenders.
There are also the jobs in the armed forces which not only pay you well enough but look after you and your family for a lifetime.
There are also jobs in the aviation sector such as Air India and Indian Airlines which are well paying and offers one a good lifestyle.
Next in line are the software engineers and developers who work to ensure that the IT and software is working. After them are the Civil Engineers who undertake and oversee all the government related tasks.
Besides these you have the jobs in Universities and the renowned institutes such as the IIMs and IITs. These jobs are not very taxing and at the same time get you a fair amount of money.
Next in line are the Personal Assistants who take home a neat pay package although they are working for the government sector.
After them you have the office clerks, data entry operators, and stenographers.
There are other government jobs that pay really well and especially now with the implementation of the sixth pay commission the salaries are almost on par with the private sector jobs.
If you are interested in the Oil and Gas sector then you can join the Hindustan Petroleum or ONGC. The pay scales are quite enviable in this job.
There are several jobs in the University Grants and this gives you a chance to pursue a doctorate degree whilst you are working and also earn simultaneously.
Another government sector job is in the Port trusts. This is one sector that has no competition as such and the work is interesting too.
The government sector also deals with telecommunication and there are lots of jobs in this industry too. The industry is booming because of the advent and coverage of mobile phones and the growing need of the internet to be connected. People in their work and personal lives need these communication means and in order to get a piece of this pie the government is willing to pay good money to get quality employees.
Therefore, if you notice the government is not such a bad pay master as it is made out to be with so many well paying jobs up for grab.
